All the hamsters in today's pet trade are descended from a single female and
three of her offspring. The variation contained in that original
population has given us the variety of pet hamsters we have today.
In 1930, Professor Aharone found the first Syrian Hamsters in a burrow near Aleepe, Syria. A mother and her 12 young were found but only 3 survived the trip. These three hamsters became the entire ancestry for the Golden Hamster. In 1938, the Golden Hamster arrived in the United States for the first time as a medical research animal.
